Remote Sensing at L-band with the Synthetic Aperture Radiometer ESTAR

Passive microwave remote sensing from space at L-band has the advantages of penetrating the atmosphere and responding to soil moisture and sea surface salinity, parameters of the surface needed for improved understanding of weather and climate. Experiments with the synthetic aperture radiometer, ESTAR, have demonstrated the potential for remote sensing soil moisture and ocean salinity at L-band and also have validated aperture synthesis as a technology for realizing these measurements in the future from space.
